This was sent to me today, I only copied the the first part the entire article is long and depressing. If anyone wants to read the rest let me know.
Why does Homeland Security need 1.4 billion rounds of ammunition?

Lee DeCovnick © American Thinker 2012

The Department of Homeland Security has purchased 1.4 billion rounds of ammunition- that is not a typo -- during the last six months. This includes 450 million rounds of .40 hollow point, 200 million rounds of .223 rifle ammunition, and 176,000 rounds of .308 168-grain hollow point boat tail (HPBT) that is used almost exclusively as ammo for sniper rifles.

From beforeitsnews.com we read:

Why is everyone all up in arms about the recent purchase by Homeland security of 1.4 Billion rounds of ammunition?

Our undeclared Foreign War in Iraq Consumes about 70,000,000 (70 Million) Rounds of Ammunition Each Year, which would take about 20 years to consume 1.4 billion rounds of ammunition ordered by the Department of Homeland Security alone, not including all the ammunition ordered by the weather service, Social Security, etc! 20 Years To Use All 1.4 Billion Rounds Of This Ammo?

Is the Department of Homeland security to protect us from foreign terrorists, or to protect the central government from the American people?

Quick math that is enough ammo to shoot every American 4 times. Maritime law says most of the ammo purchased can not be used in war so other than keeping you and I from buying ammo why did they buy so much?

They may be trying to create a shortage to drive up the prices. If thats the case it seems to be working. If the prices get to high that will drive a lot of shooters out of the market. I wanted to buy some 9mm the other day at wally world and they were completly sold out. They did have one bulk box of 380 so I grab it. Can't even find bulk boxes of 22 right now.

Catapult? Did not know they were illegal. It will make us safer to ban them, just look at Chicago and New York.

Read piece in the paper that ammo will be in short supply for the next 6-9 months. Gun and ammo companies are running at full capacity and are having trouble keeping up because of demand and supplier issues. So I guess just hang on to what you have and shoot a little less until supplies are available again.

One of the larger online ammo dealers is showing backorders on some their stuff until August. I have been in several gun shops over the last few weeks, one of them has ordered over $5 million of merchandise from several distributors wanting to get whatever is available as their shelves are bare. Once the shelves start to fill up they will cancel the rest but expects it to be 3-4 months away. Another gunshop has an AR delivering Monday that he made me a deal comparable to what I would have paid in November but decided to pass on it. Probably should have bought it and resold at a profit. Same model is selling else where for $700 more.

That information is a little different than I've read other places. Fox News is usually fairly accurate though.
